Thanks for tuning into our final checkered flag checklist of the month! We’ve talked a lot about getting to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and how to do it—but there are lots of other ways to celebrate the magic of May in Indiana in addition (or in lieu of) a trip to the track. Below are some activities and events for the family that will bring the magic of May to you.
Find a photo op installation:
Black and white, wing and wheels, and milk bottles permeate the city and the surrounding areas during the month of May. Take your crew on a hunt to find some cool racing themed installations around the city and grab a photo!
Indy Wings Murals: north side installations at Clay Terrace Mall (Carmel, IN), Grand Junction Plaza (Westfield, IN), and Downtown Noblesville. Snap a photo and post with #indywings!
Children’s Museum: the children’s museum has a few awesome odes to the greatest spectacle in racing. Venture up to the 3rd floor and grab a photo inside a show Indy Car. Next, head outside to the Sports Legends Experience and race around a mini oval track inside a pedal “Indy car.” Then grab a photo with the larger-than-life spilled milk installation and the mini pagoda.
Take a trip downtown Indy: Take a drive and see the east side of the JW Marriott wallpapered for the Indy 500. Take a walk with your family to see all the streets in downtown Indy renamed for the 33 drivers racing in the Indianapolis 500.
Attend a racing themed event:
There are a lot of racing themed events that happen around town to celebrate the prized Indiana tradition. From Kindy 500s at schools to field trips to IMS, there’s a wide variety of ways to celebrate. Below are a couple events happening soon for you and the family:
5/18 Movie at Midtown: Month of May celebration with KUIC—5/18, 6pm, Midtown Carmel. Bring the family out for a special edition of Movies at Midtown! KUIC has partnered with the City of Carmel to bring the magic of May to our community. We will show the movie Cars, have a pace car and giveaways onsite for photo ops, and special appearances from the 500 Festival Princesses. Free event—open to all! Add the event to your calendar, here.
Zoopolis 500: Proudly known as the “greatest spectacle in tortoise racing.” Head to the zoo on 5/24 to watch tortoises race to the finish line. Race begins at 11:30am but I’d recommend getting there early! More information about the event, here.
Host a Porch Party or Indy 500 themed gathering:
Getting people together to celebrate the season is not only fun—but encouraged by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway! Decorate with checkered flags (you can find lots of options at Kroger and Meijer), tell guests to wear black and white, and set up racing games for the kids (complete with a "yard of bricks" out of cardboard for start/finish line)! Have fun with it! Check out more about how celebrate with a porch party at www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/porching.
